Inner Child Therapy: How It Works & Getting Treatment

When your inner child is wounded and hurting, life can feel like a chore. Inner Child Therapy heals your inner children so you can move forward in the most positive way.

What is Inner Child Therapy?

Inner child therapy enables people to reconnect with the younger part of themselves that got “stuck in time”, clinging on to bad feelings from the past. During therapy, we look into childhood wounds that have shaped your thoughts, behaviours and relationships in adulthood.

Many difficulties such as low self-worth, fear of abandonment or difficulty setting boundaries can stem from undigested childhood pain. Inner child therapy provides a way to acknowledge these wounds and heal from them.

The Inner Child and the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind controls large part of our lives. Who writes the script of the subconscious mind? Why are we what we are today?

The adult we are today is a product of our childhood programming. The way we think and behave today are sculpted by our parents, teachers and peers. When a 5-year-old child is encounters an extremely difficult situation, a negative belief is developed that’s associated with a negative emotion. The inner child is formed. In effect, this inner child is a frozen snapshot in the adult that behaves like the 5-year-old when triggered.

Lee’s Frustration & Anger

Lee struggled with frequent outbursts of anger, often directing his frustration towards his family and colleagues. He was fully aware of his behaviour and felt frustrated that he couldn’t control it.

Through inner child therapy, we traced it back to a childhood marked by a lack of love from his mother. Nothing he did could make his mom happy. The inner child in him develop a deep-seated belief that his every action fell short of expectations, leaving him feeling empty inside. As he entered the workforce, his efforts were consistently met with criticism, further reinforcing this belief. The accumulated frustration from these experiences fuelled his anger.

Following therapy, Lee’s anger significantly reduced and he became much calmer. Even his colleagues noticed the positive change in his demeanour. Over a few sessions of therapy, the feeling of emptiness dissipated, and he no longer sought external validation to affirm his self-worth.

How Inner Child Therapy Works

Every individual has inner children because everyone encounters adverse events, or even trauma, in childhood. In a difficult situation, a child can’t make logical sense of it so this plants the seed of a negative belief such as “I’m unlovable” when it first occurs. Repeated events of similar nature further deepen the negative belief and make it permanent.

In Lee’s story above, his mother repeatedly ignored his achievements till his inner child believed that whatever he did amounted to nothing. The belief made no sense to the adult Lee but the 7-year-old Lee, his inner child, truly believed in it. Every time someone emphasised his shortcomings, this inner child got triggered and would act up in inconceivable ways.

Inner Child Therapy is a type of regression therapy that regresses you to the root cause of your negativity, which is an inner child. While it is frequently paired with hypnosis for the best results, it can also be a standalone therapy.

By exploring and re-experiencing what the inner child went through, you’ll be able to tune in to her thoughts and feelings. Bringing up these old repressed memories, hurtful as they are, opens the doors to healing them.

What Inner Child Healing Can Help You With

How Do I Know My Inner Child is Hurting?

Lise Bourbeau’s book Heal Your Wounds and Find Your True Self highlights five main wounds from childhood—rejection, abandonment, humiliation, betrayal and injustice. These wounds can influence emotional reactions and patterns in adulthood.

Having inner children can therefore manifest a wide spectrum of chronic symptoms stemming from the above five wounds. Here are some common examples: feeling not good enough, feeling unlovable, quick to anger, need for approval and validation, fear of public speaking, getting easily triggered.

In simple terms, you likely have inner children if you chronically feel down and harbour negative intrusive thoughts. The keyword here is chronic.

How To Tell if My Inner Child is In Control?

Simply put, if you find yourself getting triggered by certain people or actions, your inner child is in control. The inner child operates in the subconscious mind that spontaneously reacts to situations.

Common signs include:

  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Harbouring negative intrusive thoughts
  • Acting impulsively or seeking instant gratification
  • Struggling with responsibility or avoiding difficult conversations
  • Seeking comfort in unhealthy ways, such as emotional eating or addiction

Rebecca Takes Back Her Life by Healing Inner Child

Our client Rebecca felt her life was spiraling out of control. She felt she lacked self-respect by allowing external circumstances to dictate her life. We found that in her primary school years, a teacher instilled the belief that she was useless. This negative belief system took root within her inner child.

As a teenager, Rebecca also tragically lost her father, and she made a solemn vow to care for her mother. However, she made things more difficult when she became a single mother. The weight of the situation made her feel like a failure and further losing respect for herself.

After therapy, Rebecca regained her confidence and self-worth. She surprised her friend by offering advice for her problem. It was a huge a departure from her former habit of quietly listening without offering input. Regaining control over her life started to became a reality for her.

What to Expect in an Inner Child Healing Session?

A typical 2-hour inner child therapy session begins with the scoping of your problem. It’s important to come up with a focused problem statement so that we find its root cause in the allotted time.

Following that, the therapist guides you into a relaxed state. If necessary, hypnosis might be induced for better results. You’ll then be brought back to past events to relive them and find out what caused the inner child to form.

Subsequently, several pivotal moments similar to the original event are explored. These are moments that further impressed the negative belief upon the inner child. The in-depth exploration can take over an hour to complete.

Once the session has concluded, you’ll have a debrief with the therapist to clarify what surfaced during the therapy.

How Long Does It Take to Heal an Inner Child?

On average, people take up to 3 inner child therapy sessions to solve their problem. A unique thing we do is to teach you a handful of self-help techniques because we want to empower you to heal yourself and produce better results. Inner child therapy is not a silver bullet but a big part of your recovery. With self-work, your recovery can be accelerated and success is better guaranteed.

Can I Heal My Inner Child by Myself?

You can but here’s a big BUT. The majority of the resources on the internet tell you that you can do this by yourself but the self-help methods don’t address repressed memories.

Repressed memories are those that you’re not consciously aware of. How will you heal these past wounds if you’re not aware of them? You can’t. This is a limitation many of our therapists have experienced, thus we have gone for therapy sessions ourselves.

One of our clients remarked that inner child therapy is like taking a submarine into the depths of your subconscious mind. The therapist is like a GPS system that guides you so you can focus on navigating the deep waters.

Nonetheless, do try the self-help techniques first and see how far it takes you. When you’re ready, our therapists are here for you.
